Coquetdale lies in England's most rural county, Northumberland. While those living in Northumberland tend not to appreciate the large distances between towns as anything special, they do appreciate that Coquetdale is perhaps the most rural area of an already rural county.
It's often visitors who are most mesmerised by the areas wide ranging vistas that on a fine day allow one to see as far as the North Sea. In a world where free time is now sacred, Coquetdale's relaxed pace of life draws those who yearn to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Of course, it is easy to be mislead in thinking the area is a non-working oasis of peace and idle time, trade is vital to Coquetdale and agriculture provides one of the biggest exports the region has to offer - from fencing to masonry or farrier to dry-stone waller - the region remains full of working tradesmen who practice century old techniques.
However, ultimately it is the land itself that provides the most interest, indeed it is not just the current tourist boom that sees people come to enjoy the sights this area has to offer -
"In Northumberland alone, both heaven and earth are seen; We walk all day on long ridges, high enough to give far views of moors and valley and the sense of solitude far below.......It is the land of far horizons.."
George Macaulay Trevelyan.
The Upper Reaches of Coquetdale still remain largely unspoilt and it is here where the most spectacular scenery can be enjoyed. Alwinton is widely regarded as the entrance to the valley, where mobiles lose their reception and a Curlew is more likely to be heard than a ringtone! For the less adventurous the valley can be driven from start to end before joining the Otterburn Military ranges - that can also be driven over, providing the red flag isn't raised - and the views are breathtaking on a clear day. Those who wish to stretch their legs won't be disappointed either, the valley offers some truly epic walks. Clennel Street is a green lane that can be enjoyed by both motorists and walkers alike. Climbing upwards from Alwinton, this old drovers road leads high up into the hills , over into Uswayford Valley and along to the border fence.
Coquetdale has far to much to offer than can be discussed here. However once you've came and explored the vastness, open moorlands and river valleys you just might not want to go back!
